Tōia ake - Printed Framed Canvas

This piece is based on the mangōpare — the shape of the hammerhead shark. It represents strength, courage, and determination and staying strong through challenges that occur through life.

I’ve used a traditional kōwhaiwhai style to bring the pattern to life, letting the flowing, symmetrical shapes create rhythm and movement across the piece. The colours — black, red, white, and grey — give it contrast and balance while keeping the traditional feel.

In the background, I added a subtle tāniko design. Weaving genealogy, connection, and the strength of whānau and identity.

Altogether, this piece is about standing strong, knowing where you come from, and moving forward with purpose.
